Things to Consider When Writing a Business Plan

So you’re finally ready to start your own business. Being a business owner has numerous perks. You can be your own boss, set your own schedule, and do something you’re truly passionate about. But in order to get your business off the ground financially, you’ll need capital, and that’s where a business plan comes in.

A business plan is essentially a roadmap for your business that defines its goals and objectives. Even if you don’t need outside funding to start your company, a business plan can still be a valuable tool for you as an owner. When you sit down to write a business plan, you’re essentially forcing yourself to answer some of the pressing questions that can come to define your success.

Here are some key questions to consider when writing your business plan:

  1. What is your value proposition? What does your product or service bring to the table that none other can offer? Take the time to spell out what makes your business truly unique.
  2. What is your business model? How will you actually make money? What are your various revenue streams, and how do they relate to your cost of doing business? Think about the ways you might be able to offer your product or service in the most efficient, cost-effective fashion to maximize your profits.
  3. What is your target market or audience? How large is that market? Is it growing? If not, does it have the potential to grow? Think about the people who might need your product or service and how to go about finding them.
  4. What opportunities do you have to make money? You may be offering a specific product or service as the primary focus of your business, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to a single revenue stream. Think about other ways to generate income.
  5. What threats exist to thwart or limit your money-making opportunities? Is your target market oversaturated? Is your product so new or innovative it might be difficult to promote or understand? Think about the barriers to your success and what steps you can take to overcome them.
  6. What’s the competition like? Is there so much competition that setting yourself apart might be a challenge? Think about ways to differentiate your product or service from those that consumers have seen before.
  7. What are your financial and market-related goals? How much money do you believe your business is capable of making? What are your targets for your first year? What’s your five-year goal? Define your own personal metrics for success, keeping in mind that they don’t necessarily need to be limited to financial gains alone.
  8. Who’s running your business? If you’re looking to grow your business, don’t expect to do it alone. A big part of creating a scalable business model is making sure you have enough manpower and support on hand to achieve your goals. Think about the skills your potential employees should possess.

As you set out to write your business plan, you may find that it becomes a work in progress. You may not have all the answers to your own questions right away, but the more research and thinking you do, the more clarity you’re likely to get.
